3. Arrange Layering

Pin through all layers and baste loosely using large stitches. Then remove pins.
Trim through the batting and backing, flush with the edge of the top.
Machine or hand quilt the design on the mat as desired.
4. Sew on the Band
Fold each rectangle lengthwise, wrong side together and press.
Pin a band to 2 opposite sides of the mat, leaving about 1 inch or more over lapping at the end. Stitch ¼ inch.
Cut off ends flush with the mug mat.
Fold the band over and pin it to the seam line area. Slip stitch each (by hand) the length of the band on both sides.
Pin the bands to the other two sides, leaving 1 ½ inch overlap at the end.
Turn band in at the ends (away from the mug mat) in so the fold lines up with the Mug Mat.
Trim the end of the band, leaving about ¾ inch overlap. Stitch the band all the way across ¼ inch. Turn the band in, pin and then slip stitch by hand along the side and at the end of the band.
