Double Ax Head
This pattern uses curved pieces
and can be sewn from fabric scraps, one’s fabric stash or selected coordinated fabrics.
It is very suited for vintage fabrics, especially plaids and prints.
Looking into the history of the
Double Ax Head Quilt, I found that it dates to the early 1930's and it was
named The Friendship Quilt. Other names were Apple Core, Always
Friends, Badge of Friendship, Friendship, Charm
Quilt, Mother's Oddity, Jigsaw, and Spools.
I believe that now it is mostly referred to as Apple Core or Double Ax
Head. I found this information in The Quilters Album of Patchwork
Patterns, by Jinny Beyer. This book does not mention Double Ax Head at all. I am sure there is more to learn about the history of this block which appears to have originated in the 1900s.
There is something cool about
making a block that is in the One-Patch category with curved elements. The picture below is a sample lay-out of cut pieces which represent one block.
It is always exciting to be
starting a new quilt!
Here we go! On to the next quilt!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to this challenge. The arrangement of colors is what I will focus on.
