Teddy's Tumble Block Throw

Tester

The Tumble Block pattern is also called Baby Blocks in classic quilting. A Baby Blocks sampler block usually consists of six blocks pieced and appliqued in the middle of a square. Fabric placement produces a 3-dimentional image.

This project for Teddy is a Tumble Blocks Throw with Mind Craft fabrics. Teddy's grandmother is one of my very best friends. We met in the mid 90's during a job interview where she worked at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. We have been friends since that day. I think of her as a sister. When she asked me to make a Tumble Blocks quilt for Teddy, I was nervous because I knew the construction which consists of diamonds and triangles, could be really challenging. I decided to try it.

First, I researched how to make a Tumble Blocks quilt. This is an old design that requires accuracy. Someone is always trying to short cut it to avoid the Y seams. Everyone is afraid of the Y seams. In the end, I decided to follow the classic method and make a throw using the Y seams method! Then I purchased small fabric samples that I thought might work with the Mind Craft designs. I cut and laid out a sample and that was the beginning of Teddy’s Tumbler Blocks quilt!
