The next step in completing this quilt is pinning the layers together. I
learned to tape down the backing, the place the batting and top, and pin
carefully about 3 - 4 inches apart. The island is good for pinning, but the
tape does not hold that well on the granite.
I created a test swatch using my Bernina and Walking Foot and practiced wavy
lines since I am new to quilting by machine. I will have to put in some
practice time before going with free motion quilting, so I am keeping it easy
with this one, using the walking foot.
The traditional method of hand quilting would be to stitch within each block, 1/4 inch away from the seam. With over four hundred pieces and machine stitching, I decided to choose something easier. The blocks could also be machine stitched using the stitch in the ditch method, but I decided to go with wavy lines.
Some days I feel like a beginner quilter as I tackle the sewing machine methods. Those videos online can be misleading. We learn as we go! It just takes practice and being open minded.
