Latest Quilt - Southwest Oasis

Mid and I are working on a sampler quilt, Southwest Oasis. Very different kind of pattern. The jury is out on whether or not we like this one. The instructions are somewhat disjointed! Hopefully we will like it!

The Quilting Connection

As a little girl, one of my hated daily chores after school was stitching a straight line into a Rag Quilt. My mother sewed our clothes and every winter she would make a Rag Quilt from left over fabrics. The top, cotton batting and backing layers, stretched across, and tacked to a make-shift wooden quilt frame, supported by chairs would occupy the entire room until fully quilted. There were six daughters and we all had to contribute so many lines of quilting, every day after school. Later in life, about mid 1970s I developed an interest in Hand Quilting and never stopped. Mostly I am drawn to Hand Quilting, and this kept me connected to my mother. Finally, now, I am learning to navigate Sewing Machine Quilting. I have found so much enjoyment in all things quilting and hope to share the things that I have learned over the years about quilting.

Friendship Knot Quilt - We have an update already!

We started on the Friendship Knot quilt this week. It is not coming across so friendly at this point, but I believe it will be fine once we work out the pattern kinks. Today we reached an impasse with cutting the curved blocks. Quilters should be hesitant to purchase new gadgets because they are not always as helpful as they seem. I am hoping that my oval ruler will be useful in marking and cutting. I purchased this ruler a couple of years ago for another project which I have not completed yet. I might need a class just to understand how it works! In the meantime, I am going to use an old school solution. Cardboard! Templates from sturdy cardboard will work just fine and at least I can get going with cutting the squares.

Friendship Knot - Tops

Our Friendship Knot quilt tops are completed. We found the designers instructions to be somewhat unclear, however we each completed the Queen size. It seems bigger than a normal Queen size to me. We are at the point of having them quilted after which I will post pictures of the quilts. We tend to be more attracted to exact measurement instructions and I would say that neither of us is into making designs that use " wonky" cuts where fabric can be wasted. We grew up with a mother who sewed our clothes and quilted from the scraps. She always imparted to us that we should not waste fabric, whether making clothes or quilting. Some of the modern quilt blocks are designed to piece the block, then square and trim it, which is the case with this design. I prefer the old method of accurately measuring, cutting, and piecing. Double Axe Head Quilt

Double Ax Head Mid and I selected the Double Ax Head Quilt, also called Apple Core as our next project. This time our sister Gray will be joining us, and we are expecting to start this quilt about the last week of April. This pattern uses curved pieces and can be sewn from fabric scraps, one’s fabric stash or selected coordinated fabrics. It is very suited for vintage fabrics, especially plaids and prints. Looking into the history of the Double Ax Head Quilt, I found that it dates to the early 1930's and it was named The Friendship Quilt . Other names were Apple Core , Always Friends , Badge of Friendship , Friendship , Charm Quil t, Mother's Oddity , Jigsaw , and Spools . I believe that now it is mostly referred to as Apple Core or Double Ax Head . I found this information in The Quilters Album of Patchwork Patterns, by Jinny Beyer.
